I graduated college in 1996. \u00a0 This was a great year for me. \u00a0I moved home where I was fed and loved by my family. \u00a0I worked for a small software company doing Visual Cobol who went bust. \u00a0I was a hard worker and never said no to an opportunity. \u00a0When the company went bust, I worked at a local concrete factory until I got into a factory automation job. \u00a0 Now I am where I am and boy did I learn a lot. \u00a0Some of what I learned is from making mistakes and some I learned by mentors and leaders in my life.<\/p>\n

What I learned from my family:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Working hard always pays off in the long run.<\/li>\n
  2. If you do not like what you are doing, find something you do enjoy<\/li>\n
  3. Always be honest<\/li>\n
  4. If you do not work, \u00a0you will not have money. \u00a0If you work hard, everything works out.<\/li>\n
  5. Family will always be there in the end.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What I learned from my career:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Kids out of college know more than I do about the current technology and\u00a0methodologies\u00a0– listen to them<\/li>\n
    2. You cannot know everything, so listen with an open mind<\/li>\n
    3. Own up to your mistakes, you are human<\/li>\n
    4. Find a balance of family, friends and career – you will be happier<\/li>\n
    5. Money is not everything, a new career with less money is often worth the opportunity<\/li>\n
    6. You can learn anything if you listen, work hard and communicate. \u00a0Do not be afraid to ask questions<\/li>\n
    7. Be yourself – Be true to yourself.<\/li>\n
    8. Love what you do and your work will love you back<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Some of my biggest mistakes<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Did not follow my heart<\/li>\n
      2. Let my wallet decide my career path<\/li>\n
      3. Not asking enough questions<\/li>\n
      4. Worried too much about the future<\/li>\n
      5. Not knowing how to communicate<\/li>\n
      6. Did not look before I leaped – career change<\/li>\n
      7. Not appreciate what I had or was given<\/li>\n
      8. Everyone’s\u00a0favourite\u00a0: Foot In Mouth ( getting better at not doing this )<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The best things I did for myself<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Pay for most of my own schooling<\/li>\n
        2. Learn to work hard – parents played an important role<\/li>\n
        3. Surround myself with people of self-worth<\/li>\n
        4. Learn to communicate ( Toastmasters )<\/li>\n
        5. Decide to live for my family<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Take what you want from this. \u00a0Mistakes are fine if you learn from them and own up to them. \u00a0You are human. \u00a0Find a life good balance. \u00a0Listen to those around you as you cannot know everything. \u00a0Learning is a life journey that I enjoy, because I accepted the fact that I am not perfect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
