{"id":102,"date":"2011-06-28T12:51:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T12:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/madprogrammer76.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/28\/a-call-to-senior-developers-rise-up"},"modified":"2011-06-28T12:51:00","modified_gmt":"2011-06-28T12:51:00","slug":"a-call-to-senior-developers-rise-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/andrewpallant.ca\/wordpress\/a-call-to-senior-developers-rise-up\/","title":{"rendered":"A Call To Senior Developers &#8211; Rise Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin:0;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">Every year is there is an influx of newly trained developers from our local colleges. \u00a0They have paid good money to become book smart and if they are lucky maybe some\u00a0practical\u00a0from their co-ops. \u00a0 They enter the work force with nothing more than a smile and a piece of paper; often not knowing where to turn. \u00a0They look around, but there are no &#8220;Help Wanted&#8221; signs. \u00a0 Once they are in, they are thrown projects with very little guidance.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">I was asked a question recently and I gave my opinion on how it should be done. \u00a0After, I had instructed the person to go their senior developers for some guidance of how they would like to see it. \u00a0 I was told they do not care as long as it works. \u00a0 I thought this is crazy, how could they not care? \u00a0 We are the Senior Developers with the experience. \u00a0 We know how it should be done and how it should look. \u00a0Sometimes the &#8220;how&#8221; is more of a company culture, but it makes the code easier for everyone to read after the fact. \u00a0 If we do not teach them how to do things, style and logically; we will essentially create ourselves more working fixing things that could have been done correct the first time. We are the guides for the young people. \u00a0If we know of a job in the city, we should promote it. \u00a0If we know how to do something or how it should look, we should teach it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">There is far more to being a Senior Developer than years of service. I believe deep down inside they are afraid the younger developers will steal their positions. \u00a0It is a possibility, but not likely. \u00a0If we stand up and take the younger developers by the hand and guide them. \u00a0 Teach them to do their jobs to our standards; we will essentially create a little job security for ourselves. \u00a0The employer will see that we care about the projects and we care about the\u00a0mentor-ship\u00a0of others. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin:0;\"><span style=\"color:black;\">We are a team and together we will make things happen within our employment. \u00a0The Senior Developer is the leader of the team. \u00a0Stand up, take your job seriously and help those who are starting out.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>In-turn, you will gain the reward of lesser work, a developer you can trust and the respect of your employer.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">Probably more to come on this topic&#8230;
